We caught up with supercolorist, Lancelot Catan, (who’s also the colorist on StarGazers) and here’s what he had to say:
Anomalous Comics: What Projects have you done or been a part of?
Lancelot Catan: I have self-published my own projects where I was the writer and colorist. I’ve been planning to have my own digital comics website. Really eager to, but sometimes things are not coming into place. But I just keep pushing til I make that dream of mine come true.
I have done projects for other creators, too. Pinup coloring for Pross Comics and a one-shot comic. Earthruler by Darrin O’toole and Shawn Langley, Coldman for Red Leaf Comics and Nightwasp for Keith Crook. Right now, I’m doing some pinup and sequential coloring for Futurescope and The Nobodies by Baleriano Gaona.
AC: Was there a major event that led to your decision to draw comics?
LC: Well, I seldom draw; I suck at drawing. But I write and color comics locally as an independent comic creator with my buddy, Carl Borla Embalzado, as my illustrator. And I’m planning to work with other local artists here soon.
AC: Why Comics?
LC: Well, I’ve been a comic reader and a fan since I was a kid. My father was a known illustrator here in the Philippines and also a student of Nestor Redondo and had worked with DC Comics in the 80’s. I think that’s where I start my ambition of owning my own comic publishing company. I’ve been betting on lottery, but still no luck though lol. I’ll still keep on dreaming.
AC: Who are your influences?
LC: Too many to mention. But my Father was my number one influence. In coloring, lots of them. I wish someday to become a badass colorist like them.
AC: What would you be doing now if you weren’t making comics?
LC: Actually, I’m just new in the industry of making comics. I’ve been a businessman, a kitchen helper, a technician, a pipefitter, a househusband. I can be anyone I choose to be. But making comics is my passion so I revisited my old dream. Now, I’m here flooding FB, posting my works and hoping someone will notice and hire me as an inhouse colorist for $100 + a page and I’ll be okay.
AC: What advice can you give to aspiring creators?
LC: Well, do what you love and money will follow. If you have to work free sometimes just to enhanced your skill, do it. The reward will be great. Like me, I’m doing what I love and now I’m looking for money, lol. Dont be shy to ask experienced artists. That’s what I’ve been doing. We still have lots to learn in this industry. And asking for help from the experts is one of the effective ways of learning. We are all co-creators of this universe. We need each other.
AC: What’s your favorite quote?
LC: “Thoughts are Things”.
AC: What’s your favorite comic series or OGN? What are you reading now?
LC: Again, too many to mention. All comic books that my hands can reach are my favorites. Simply because they are comics. And creators worked hard to make them. But right now, I’m reading “The Greatest Salesman in the World” by Og Mandino.
AC: What are your dream projects? Just in case someone who can make that happen is reading this.
LC: I want to work with Adi Granov and J. Scott Campbell as their colorist. That or a masseur for Kate Finnegan and Nei Rufino while they’re working. lol.
AC: What are you most looking forward to this year?
LC: I really wanted to complete my own webcomic site.
AC: Where can we find you?
AC: Anything else you’d like to add?
LC: I would like to thank Anomalous Comics for having me here. Very much appreciated. 😀
Aw, we love you, too, Lancelot!
Look for StarGazers coming soon from Lancelot Catan and the rest of the Anomalies!
